About the program

Open-pollinated. California-developed.
PVP-protected since the beginning.

Orsetti's lettuce program focuses on open-pollinated varieties with documented Plant Variety Protection. PVP protection means these varieties meet federal standards for distinctness, uniformity, and stability — each one has a filed variety description with the USDA. That documentation matters when you need consistency lot after lot.

All varieties are developed and trialed from the San Juan Bautista research facility under actual Central Coast field conditions. Disease pressure, soil variability, and seasonal climate shifts are part of the evaluation — not controlled out. What performs in San Juan Bautista is ready for commercial production.

Common questions

What lettuce varieties does Orsetti Seeds offer?

Orsetti Seeds offers four PVP-protected open-pollinated lettuce varieties: Two Star PVP (the green looseleaf standard for fresh market and whole leaf), Marin PVP (larger Two Star type with improved holding for packing/shipping), Kodiak PVP (heat-tolerant green looseleaf for warmer conditions), and Red Fusion PVP (red leaf for fresh market and specialty programs). All green leaf varieties mature at approximately 55 days; Red Fusion at 70 days.

What does PVP-protected mean for these varieties?

Plant Variety Protection (PVP) is a form of intellectual property protection for open-pollinated plant varieties, administered by the USDA. PVP-protected varieties have documented variety descriptions and legally protected seed rights. Orsetti's lettuce program is built around PVP varieties, which indicates they meet the distinctness, uniformity, and stability standards required for federal protection.

What is the difference between Two Star PVP and Marin PVP?

Two Star PVP is the original standard — the benchmark for green looseleaf production. Marin PVP is a larger Two Star type with improved color and enhanced pliability that performs better through packing and shipping. For operations that prioritize holding quality after harvest, Marin PVP offers a meaningful improvement. Both varieties have shown tolerance to tomato bushy stunt virus.

Are these lettuce varieties suited for mechanical harvest?

The looseleaf varieties — Two Star PVP, Marin PVP, and Kodiak PVP — are well-suited for whole leaf harvest production systems common in commercial lettuce operations. Red Fusion PVP is typically grown for fresh market retail. Contact us to discuss variety performance for your specific harvest system.

Are Orsetti lettuce varieties CCOF certified organic?

Orsetti Seeds is CCOF certified organic. The CCOF certification covers organic production across Orsetti's catalog. Contact us to confirm organic availability for specific lettuce varieties and current season inventory.
